Bullet train kills 18 workers in Shandong
EIGHTEEN people were killed and nine others were injured as a high-speed train ploughed through a work team in Shandong Province on Wednesday, China's work safety watchdog（工作安全监督人） announced today.
The accident happened at 8:48pm in the city of Anqiu in Shandong, near the coastal city of Qingdao, when the team, employees of the China Railway 16th Group Co Ltd, was relocating（重置） the tracks, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its Website.
Maintenance work was scheduled between 10pm and 1:30am and train speeds were scheduled to be reduced to 45 kilometers per hour at 9pm in the area where; however, some workers arrived early on Wednesday, thus causing the accident, Xinhua news agency reported.
The bullet train was running as scheduled, Xinhua said.
The train was en route（在途中） to Qinqdao after having departed（从北京出发） from Beijing.
The nationwide annual Spring Festival travel peak season started on Wednesday and will continue to March 2. It is estimated（预计） that 178.60 million people will travel throughout China by railway during the peak season.
