Yao to miss six weeks of NBA season

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Yao Ming of Houston Rockets will miss at least six weeks of the National Basketball Association season after fracturing his right knee in a 98-93 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at home on Saturday.
The Chinese center limped off the court with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter after hurting his knee in an attempt to block a Tim Thomas shot.
An MRI exam showed a small non-displaced bone fracture for Yao.
Keith Jones, the Rockets' trainer, said "we think he'll do well with just rest. An option is to do something more, surgery. We have to wait and see. Because it's on a weight-bearing surface, we're saying a minimum of six weeks."
The Rockets were already playing without star guard Tracy McGrady, sidelined with back spasms for the past seven games.
Yao, who ranked eighth in NBA scorers, was leading the team with 26.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks a game.
The Rockets are 16-11 but their record without Yao and McGrady is only 1-8.
